Wood work surfaces have shaken off the scrubbed kitchen table image and now that wood is sourced from around the world, there are some very durable woods available (although avoid buying endangered tropical hardwoods if you can: a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label marks extracting wood from a sustainable source. Wood countertops must be sealed to protect them from moisture (especially in centrally heated homes) and can be finished with a lacquer, which must be reapplied every year , or oil every two to three months. It is stronger and more resistant to heat marks than lacquered wood and also improves over time. Another option is to use wood grain (for example, wood that has been turned to the point and glued in blocks) .This looks like a cutting board, is less prone to warping and offers a good cutting surface as it is much harder. Varnished plywood (eg gada layered to give a striped profile) can also be a good countertop at a very reasonable price. t varies depending on the type of wood and the application: in general, the stronger the wood, the higher the cost.

Advantage:
The huge variety of woods means great potential for creativity: a wooden countertop can appear dark and luxurious (stained oak works well, if you can find it from a sustainable source); warm and honey-colored (reclaimed teak, maple) or pale and interesting (beech, elm, fir).

It’s warm, soft, natural, and is enhanced by the edge.

A little softer wooden top and capable of absorbing noise.

It can be used to soften the hard edges and glossy finish of stainless steel and glass and will also add warmth to a cool white kitchen.

It can be installed by a competent hobbyist.

Fairly Easy to Maintain – Reapply oil (tung oil, available at DIY stores) or hairspray when needed and avoid harsh abrasive cleaners. It can survive a good scrubbing if you feel the need.

Disadvantages:
All wood will warp to some degree in a centrally heated kitchen, although hardwoods will be less affected.

Buttwood joints can begin to split open if not properly sealed.

It will stain, scratch, and burn, so be prepared to use a cutting board.

I will talk about other types of kitchen countertops in my next articles. For more information on the kitchen, click here.
