Not all that glitter is gold, the old adage goes. Most of us have heard of this proverb before and even use it in our essays at school. Things may look very beautiful or attractive. However, when observed closely, they turn out to be the exact opposite. What may be pleasing to the eye may simply be a snake in disguise. Sometimes even the wisest men fall victim to such disappointments.

It is true that we tend to make judgments and decisions based on outward appearances. Unfortunately, many people hide their imperfections behind evil masks, covering their real appearance, in order to gain acceptance in society. It’s really sad to see how they make up their own lies and we tend to take their word for it.

The appearance of a person does not define the person they are. The vast majority of men and women prefer loving partners who have nothing honorable to offer other than their outward beauty. Outward appearance is subject to depreciation, but a great personality lasts forever. Life is too short to waste your valuable time and resources on someone who simply has nothing valuable to offer other than their physical appearance. Some of the people we find less attractive can actually be beautiful when seen from a different angle.

Simplicity and humility can also be deceptive. One can pretend to be kind and compassionate even though one is not. Going to church does not make you a saint. Wearing a long robe does not make one a monk; it can be a demon disguised as an angel of light, or a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Some people are polite, loving, friendly, and generous, until you try to get to know their true personality. In reality, they are not even close to having such a character. One should always try to determine the true nature of a person or thing before jumping to conclusions. We must always try to discover the truth hidden behind their shining faces.

We should not judge people just by looking at their physical attributes. Often what we see is not reality. Someone may smile at you, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy. Many rings are made of low quality metals and plated with gold to hide their flaws. Gold cannot be gold unless the entire object is made of gold.

Remember, appearances can be deceiving and judgment based on appearances can be very dangerous.
