Family vacations can be the most magical times of our childhood, and they can be quite magical for parents, too, when they’re doing well. A family vacation gone wrong can be a nightmare for overworked adults and wayward kids. Here’s how to make sure you create magical memories instead of memories you’d rather forget:

Involve children in the planning stage

If they’re old enough to talk, then they’re old enough to talk about their vacation plans. Children should be asked what their expectations are for the holidays and what they would like to be able to do. They must know where they are going; try to get them excited about the location. You should have already thought about why it will be perfect for the whole family, so tell them about it. Communicating expectations early on can prevent unpleasant attitudes and disappointments later; it can also help build excitement for your very special adventure.

But don’t let the kids make all the decisions.

Of course, children (even Bolshi teens) should not be allowed to trick you into doing something you don’t want to do. A common mistake people make is to give in to pressure from the kids and end up on a vacation (for example, to a theme park) that they never wanted to be on. Of course, there will be some compromises to be made by everyone, but the best family vacations are those that everyone, adults and children, can enjoy. And kids don’t always know what’s best, of course. They may complain about active vacations, hiking, or biking, but when they go out, they may just have the time of their lives. That’s why sometimes parents just have to lay down the law.

To be prepared

Make sure you’ve done your basic research. Make sure all documentation is in order. Always have water, wet wipes and snacks on hand. Make sure you have a first aid kit for any small emergencies. Use basic common sense and pack accordingly. Let kids pack their own bags, to engage them and give them a sense of hands-on at all times, but be sure to check toddlers’ bags to make sure they haven’t just packed toys, they have the basics as well.

keep the kids busy

Do not give them space to meditate or get bored. Children who entertain themselves during the holidays with active activities and activities will be much less likely to get cranky or naughty. Remember to involve them so they don’t feel like they’re being dragged from one place to another. They’ll just be too tired from all the fun they’ve had. Keep things moving and everyone is much more likely to have a good time. A busy mind and body make children and parents happy.

But factor in the break time

However, make sure there is enough time for the children to rest and relax; no one would enjoy a relentless pace. This is your vacation too, so make sure between fun activities and excursions there is plenty of time for you to rest and relax. Even if they don’t know they’re too tired, you certainly will!
