Growing grapes is one of the most promising and exciting overlooked outdoor hobbies one can get involved in. It’s fun, challenging, and best of all, rewarding in the sense that once you have a fully developed grape farm or grape garden, you’ll enjoy the benefits of having fresh wine grapes to eat at your convenience. Also, since growing grapes is an outdoor hobby, it will force you to get up from your lazy chair and get outdoors and truly become one with nature.

Growing grapes, while appealing to most because of the delicious home grown wine grapes, can be quite challenging at times. There are some common mistakes that many new grape growers make. I’d like to briefly cover them with you now.

Growing Grapes Common Mistake #1:

One of the most common grape growing mistakes that new grape gardeners make is buying already grown vines and planting them in their garden. Here is the problem encountered with this situation. Your local nursery will buy vines in bulk at a low price and put them up for sale. They will all look cute and pretty at the nursery since they just brought them in. However, what you, the customer, don’t know is that these vines have come from different parts of the country, places where in fact the vines grew really healthy and strong.

You see, the climate and atmosphere play a key role in the successful cultivation of grapes. By growing grapes in different parts of the country, you can expect totally different results with your vines. Just a different climate will affect the types of diseases your vines might be hit with or when, if at all, they will fruit best. Therefore, do not be fooled by what they sell you at the nursery. It is best to educate yourself on how to grow grapes from an expert and understand how the climate in your area will affect your vines.

Common mistake #2 when growing grapes:

The second most common mistake made when growing grapes is the rush to spray.

I understand that it is frustrating to see some insects on your vines and it can become quite irresistible to avoid spraying your vines to clean them. Well, don’t go too trigger happy. There are many other procedures you can use to keep your vines under pest control. Spraying should only be used when really necessary because it can risk killing everything else in the area that would normally have controlled those pesky pests.

Common mistake #3 when growing grapes:

Finally we come to the third most common mistake in the cultivation of the vine. This one consists of planting vines without learning how to train vines first. That’s like buying a car without knowing how to drive. Vines require proper training and pruning in order to grow successfully and most novice gardeners simply don’t understand that growing grapes requires more than simply planting a few vine seeds and watering them every day.

Growing grapes can start out as a fun hobby and eventually turn into a full-time career. However, it takes some skill and knowledge to succeed in growing grapes. Otherwise, you’ll probably make some of the costly rookie mistakes mentioned above.
