If you rent an apartment, your chances of being a victim of a burglar are possibly greater than a private landlord due to the relative ease of access to the building. But make no mistake about it. The risks homeowners face are also monumental.

Thieves can try to break into your rented or owned property whether or not you are there. Of course, it is much easier if you are on vacation.

This article focuses first on the methods a tenant can take to avoid becoming a victim.

How a tenant can prevent a burglary:

1. Ask your insurance agent what type of renters insurance makes the most sense for you so that you are adequately protected against any loss from theft or associated damage.
2. Know who your neighbors and owner are so you can recognize who does not belong to the building.
3. Ask your landlord if it is okay to put additional locks on your door as an additional measure of security against an attempted trespass.
4. Place a sturdy rod between your balcony door to prevent a stranger from entering.
5. Check the lock on your storage container and install a new one if it is not in good working order.
6. Never let anyone in from the building entrance without acknowledging that it is safe to do so through intercom recognition.
7. Install a security system designed for use by the apartment’s tenant.
8. Do not leave expensive things on the porch and hide the contents of your house from prying eyes by closing the blinds, etc.

Now, we focus on the homeowner.

How a homeowner can prevent a burglary:

1. Ask your insurance specialist to review your policy so there are no gaps in protective coverage.
2. Have a good security system.
3. Even if you don’t have a security system, put up a sign over a dog or an alarm and put up fake security cameras, all to deter criminals.
4. If you are going on vacation, pack your car while it is in the garage or pack it in a way that is not noticeable.
5. Hide valuables in a safe house, out of the reach of anyone looking to steal things.
6. Ask a neighbor to watch your house while you are away.
7. Before you leave, set the lights on a timer to go on and off as if you were inside.
8. Ask a neighbor or friend to fetch your mail and the newspaper while you are away.
9. Have someone park your car in your driveway while you are away.
10. Never leave a ladder or anything else outside your home that could help a burglar get in.
