Many people have graphic printed shirts that have cracked and split, making the shirt look terrible. Some people have had their clothes specially made or bought at a concert or other occasion to remember them. These clothes can be expensive and won’t last long if you don’t know how to properly care for them. Getting the most out of your graphic tee is no problem if you follow a few rules when cleaning and wearing it.

The first thing to do is buy a detergent that will not harm your clothes. Look for a detergent that has been made to be gentle on colors or generally gentle on clothes. Some laundry detergents are very strong and will fade and destroy custom clothing very quickly. Detergent may be more expensive than you are used to, but if you only use it on certain items, it will last longer.

Put your washing machine in a delicate place for your clothes.

Your washing machine should have a gentle or delicate cycle that can help you preserve the graphic on your clothes for a long period of time. Some people have a hand wash setting on their washing machine that they use for graphic print clothing. If you take your clothes to a launderette, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a washing machine with a gentle or delicate cycle.

Make sure to separate the color of the clothing before you wash it. You don’t want your shirt to look dirty or other colors to fade. You also don’t want the colors to fade on your other clothes. Separate dark shades from highlights and wash accordingly. All your clothes will benefit from color separation before washing.

It can be tempting to put everything together when you don’t have a lot of time, but if you plan ahead and have two baskets, you can make the separation a lot easier. As soon as you take off your clothes, separate them between the two baskets according to light and dark colors. If you don’t have any baskets and you dump all of your clothes down a laundry chute, you may want to at least get a laundry basket and put light or dark clothes aside.

Wash your clothes in cold water and make sure the shirts are inside out. Cold water keeps clothing and graphics from peeling and shrinking, and it will save you a bit of money on your energy bill. Make sure your graphic tee is inside out to further protect the graphic from cracks and other damage. Again, as soon as you take off your shirt, flip it over to save time later.

Hang your shirt to dry. Dryer heat can seriously damage your graphic t-shirt. Signs of damage may not be visible at first, but you will eventually see what the heat has done to destroy your clothing. You can hang your shirt on a wooden hanger anywhere you have room to hang it; you don’t need a clothesline to do this.

Only wear your graphic-printed T-shirt when you know it can protect it from stains and other scuffs. You may be tempted to wear your favorite clothes for certain events, but if your clothes are at risk of getting heavily soiled or damaged, it is best to reconsider what you are going to wear that day. Save your good clothes for days when there is little risk of damage, and if you must wear them, wear aprons and gowns to protect them.
