According to research, the Triple P Positive Parenting Program is the highest ranked parenting program in the United Nations. Triple P is backed by over 30 years of research and has helped millions of families around the world. Triple P supports focus on five parenting strategies. These are:

  • taking care of ourselves first

  • talking to our children

  • help our children find ways to entertain themselves

  • lead by example

  • set clear rules and consequences while teaching our children risk assessment

I’m going to quickly talk about the first two here.

Have you seen parents look exhausted because they just don’t have the time to get enough rest? Have you seen exhausted parents driving through the drive-thru fast food because they don’t have time to get the proper nutrition they need?

We parents somehow need to find some ‘me time’. Hey, there are a lot of good reasons the airline industry tells us to put on our own oxygen mask first, before helping our kids put on theirs. Parents, if we are a mess, then we will not be able to help our children.

Teens quickly get defensive when they think we’re reading them. Sometimes we find ourselves separated from our teenage children by a locked bedroom door as we yell, “I know you can hear me in there!” Instead, let’s be more proactive rather than reactive with our teens. Let’s take the time to really talk to our kids about the things they enjoy. Let’s try to ask them questions more frequently than throwing affirmations or demands at them. If we do it enough, we could build that emotional connection with them that will help us get through the days that aren’t so good.

Now, as my grandfather always said, “Go learn, lead, and pave the way to a better world for all of us.” Remember and do your best to apply these parenting tips from the #1 parenting program in the world! And once again parents, thank you in advance for all you do and will do…
