As winter looms over us like a runaway freight train, the serious bass angler will have no choice but to engage in some winter bass fishing. In this article I will discuss 3 effective cold weather bass lures that are effective in the winter months. It’s no secret that the winter months are one of the hardest times of the year to fish for bass. When the water temperature drops below fifty degrees, fishing can become extremely difficult.

One of the most important things to remember during the winter months is that the bass will move into deeper water. They tend to like deep water structure near shallow plains when they can find them. In this way in the afternoon (once the sun has had the opportunity to warm the water on the floor a bit) they can move to these floors to feed on bait fish. Fishing for these bass is a great winter fishing strategy.

Another key thing to remember when fishing during cold weather months is that the strikes will be much lighter than when the water temperatures are higher. The lightest line and the most sensitive rods are very important during the cold weather months. With that said, let’s get down to business, shall we?

  1. Jigging Spoons: Jigging spoons jigging over deep water structures during the winter months are a great winter bass fishing tactic. Use your depth finder to locate the bass hanging around the deep water structure and you are good to go. Remember, seabass like to hit the spoon when it falls, so be sure to keep an eye on your line. Jigging spoons are a great winter bass fishing bait,
  2. Crank Baits – Shallow water bushes and rocks will produce bass, but keep in mind that you won’t get a lot of hits. Bass are much slower at this time of year and feed much less frequently. One key during any winter bass fishing excursion is to use a crank bait that is as realistic as possible. The more realistic the seabass bait, the more apt the seabass will be to eat, especially during winter when they don’t feel like eating anyway.
  3. Plastic Worm – A slowly worked plastic worm can be an effective winter bass fishing technique. You want to work the areas that you are fishing very thoroughly in the winter. Many times, if you don’t move your worm and just “shake” the tips of the reeds, a hit will be unleashed. Using a spray to attract wolves is also a great idea during the winter months.

The bottom line is that although bass is much less active during the winter months, it does not mean that winter bass fishing cannot be effective. When fishing for bass during the winter months, these 3 bass fishing lures should definitely be part of your bass fishing repertoire.
