Unlike a traditional toothbrush which comes with a standard head most electric toothbrushes can use a wide range of replacement brush heads. This means you can swap out your head depending on the type of cleaning action you want to take or if your gums need extra care. There are even special heads which claim to whiten teeth and get into hard-to-reach places in the mouth.
The standard Oral-B head, the Precision Clean is circular in shape with bristles of different lengths that are designed to work together to clean every part of your teeth. The criss cross bristles in the middle are specifically designed to lift stains and dirt from between your teeth. This head is supplied with most Oral-B brushes, except for iO toothbrush heads which come with their own special head.
There are many other Oral-B heads to choose from, each with different designs and bristle types. For example the Optical Clean is an advanced version of the Precision Clean, with a slightly larger head and bristles that are curved to better reach the back of your teeth. It also includes MicroPulse bristles in the centre that are designed to get into those hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. The Sensitive Gum Care is another Oral-B option that has extra long bristles for reaching between your teeth to help prevent gingivitis.

In addition to the standard Oral-B heads there are a number of third party brush head manufacturers that produce compatible heads. Often these third-party heads are cheaper than the name brands and offer similar performance. They are sometimes sold in high street shops such as Boots and Superdrug but they can also be bought online from places like eBay and Amazon, although purchasing from these sites is a bit of a minefield as some third-party sellers can have a poor track record.
Another option is the Oral-B Floss Action head. This has a series of thin, flexible ‘flossing’ ridges that gently remove plaque and food from the tight spaces between your teeth. This is not a replacement for flossing but can be used in conjunction with your regular brushing routine.
Other brands of electric toothbrushes, such as Philips Sonicare, have their own selection of replacement brush heads. Most of these are not compatible with all models of Sonicare brush handle but you can check compatibility by looking for the model number on the base of your current brush head or using this handy guide on how to find out which model your brush belongs to.
Using the right brush head for your brush can improve the overall quality of your oral hygiene regime and protect your gums by preventing damage caused by too much brushing. Choosing a head with specialized features can also make your brushing regime more effective as each head is designed to fit and work perfectly with specific cleaning modes.
