Vintage clothing is a style that is generally considered to have emerged between the 1920s and 1970s. Vintage clothing comes in many forms, but they are a favorite. Vintage coats do not have to be new, they can also be second-hand. Some say that owning a second hand coat from the early 20th century adds to the mystique, to the overall “feel” of owning the coat.

In fact, there is only a small percentage of these coats that we could classify as ‘new’ from the time they were produced, these usually come from old warehouse stock, known as dead stock. These dead stock items are very valuable, especially when they come with their original tags. So you may find it hard to get your hands on a ‘new’ vintage coat these days; Don’t worry though, retro clothing and indeed vintage coat reproductions exist today, ready for only you to wear!

You should know that there are varying degrees of condition that vintage coats can come in:

Perfect: A like-new item with no signs of wear.

Near mint – some signs of wear but hardly noticeable.

Excellent – Typical signs of wear from use.

Very Good – May have some surface blemishes but ultimately still a usable product.

Good: It can be very difficult to fix any serious flaw, although it is still usable.

Be sure to keep these condition levels for the coats in mind when you are looking for them. It is always wise to ensure that you can gather as much information as possible regarding the coat in question. The labels (labels if available) will provide you with details such as the fabric, designer, year of production, original color, and most important measurements. You will also be able to notice any wear to the surface. Another important note has to do with measurements; vintage coats and clothing in general is measured by hip, waist and bust. Knowing your size isn’t enough to just buy a vintage coat, you need to take out the tape and get those extra measurements for a vintage coat that fits you!

There are plenty of places to buy and actually sell these coats, but you have to remember to make sure you get as much information as possible about the clothes you’re buying. Whether you’re looking for a ‘new’ coat, a pre-owned item, a retrospective, or even a reproduction, you’re guaranteed to look authentic from start to finish.
