‘0x8004010f: The Outlook data file cannot be accessed’ or ‘The operation failed, an object could not be found’. The error message appears when your email profile in Microsoft Outlook 2010 is incorrectly configured (in other words, Microsoft Outlook misconfiguration). Check out the free Microsoft Outlook support guide mentioned below and fix your Microsoft Outlook problem.

Instructions:

Close Microsoft Outlook. Also, quit MSN or Windows Messenger if it is currently running. Now click on the Start button and navigate to Control Panel. Find Mail and double-click on it. When you are in the Mail Settings-Outlook window, click the Show Profiles button. This will take you to the email profile dialog. Click to select your email profile (if there are many) and press the Properties button. Click the Data Files button in the next window.

When you are in Account Settings, click to highlight the Data Files tab. Write down the name and path of the data file shown below. This is the default data file (with a check mark next to it) that stores your email profile data. Now click on the Email tab, select your email profile and click on the Delete button. Confirm the action if prompted. When you’re done, close the window by clicking the Close button in the bottom right corner.

Now that you have your email profile details, create a new one. Click the Start button and go to Control Panel > Mail. When you’re in the Mail Settings-Outlook window, click Show Profiles. Click the Add button in the next window. It will take you to the Add New Account dialog. If you want Outlook to automatically create and configure your email profile, fill in the required details like name, email address, and password, etc. and press the Next button.

If you want to manually configure the settings, do not complete anything and simply click the button next to Manually configure server settings or additional server types. Click the Next button to continue. Click the Internet E-mail button and click Next. When you are in the Internet Email Settings window, enter the required details such as name, email address, correctly (no misspellings) in the appropriate fields. Choose your server type from the dropdown arrow next to Account Type.

Enter the incoming and outgoing server information, username and password in the appropriate fields and check the Remember password box. Click the More Settings button. Click on the Advanced tab. Enter the port numbers for the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Incoming server (POP3). Leave the default option (None) selected next to Use the following encrypted connection type.

Set the server timeout to the maximum level. Check the Leave a copy of messages on the server box if you want your webmail account to keep a copy of email messages. If you don’t check this option, all your emails will be downloaded to Microsoft Outlook and your webmail account will have nothing. When you’re done, click the OK button. You will return to the Internet Email Settings window.

Click the Test Account Settings button to test your new email profile settings. If all goes well, you will see a congratulatory message. Click the Finish button to exit the window and enter Outlook. If the test returns an error message, review it and start troubleshooting. Please double check your account settings and correct them if necessary. If you are not sure of the details, contact your Internet Service Provider and take all the required information.

Once you’ve set up the correct email account, set it as the default email profile. To do this, go back to the Mail Settings-Outlook window (see the first step). Click the button next to Always use this profile and select Outlook from the dropdown arrow below. Click the Apply button and then OK to apply the changes and exit the window. Close and reopen Outlook. When you’re done, send or receive email or use Outlook however you like.

Additional tips:

The error can also be related to the offline address book or an Outlook profile that is not a member of the domain. Contact your Exchange server or IT administrator to resolve this issue. If the problem persists, contact Microsoft Outlook Support.
