Having a puppy is great. It brings you lots of laughter and lots of joy. He provides company when he needs it and his pup will never judge him. But all this tender love and care doesn’t come without problems. Your pup will often pee and poop on your precious carpet or bed and that can be quite a headache. Right now you are wondering how you can potty train a puppy and I am going to teach you how.
If you find that your dog has urinated or pooped where he shouldn’t, then what you want to do is take your pup to the scene and tell him no in a stern voice. There is a problem with this. Chances are your pup doesn’t know what you’re talking about and doesn’t realize why you’re saying no.
The best thing to do is to catch him in the act of peeing or pooping and get your dog to start off with a stern no! Your pup will make the immediate connection that you are scolding him because he urinated in that part of the house. Next, you want to take him to where you want him to do his activity and keep him there until he’s done. If he doesn’t want to go, he leaves the dog there. When he leaves, praise your pup and give him a treat. He will learn, through repeated actions, that he should pee and poop there.
Another thing you can do is put some beans in an aluminum can and when you see your pup going where you are not supposed to, you rattle the can and it will go. He will learn that going there will make the sound go off. Since the sound is so initial, he will quickly learn not to go there. If you see him going where he’s supposed to go, don’t rattle the can, instead praise him, say good boys or girls, and pet him. They’ll make the mental connection or the praise and petting and realize what he did there is good and move on.
You may have to do this several times and it may take a while for your pup to learn, so be patient. Don’t hit your dog. Hitting will only make him fear you and you don’t want him to fear you, you want him to respect and obey you. Positive reinforcement is much more effective in animals, so give your dog positive reinforcement when he does something right.
