It would not be diplomatic to say that all options are on the table if we say it for the writing table in relation to its use and multiplicity of purposes. Drafting tables are still all the rage and a preferred option as they give home and office users the opportunity for multi-faceted utility.

A historical backdrop to the drafting table is that they were used as an antique crafted from solid oak with brass fittings that used to be a status symbol. Although we have become more practical and of course demanding in the contemporary lifestyle, it is still of great importance as it is a more secure way to protect intellectual property.

Contemporary times have almost completely changed the way we live and how we carry out our daily operations. But despite the advent of the computer-aided design mechanism, architects and structural designers still rely on pencil plans on their drawing board. They have multiple purposes such as drawing, writing and drawing on a large sheet of paper as they were used during pre-industrial times and have now been superseded by modern plotters which magnify the image or sketch several times for precise technical illustrations or displays.

The drawing table is also sometimes called a mechanical table because of the different drawing instruments like the square set, the guard; French curve, template, etc. are used. Modern tables are mostly made of steel, due to which tables made of steel are lightweight compared to the old ones and also provide strength and are easy to transport. A typical drafting board is made up of a thick sheet of compressed fiberboard with Formica lamination bolted to the rest of the frame.

Drafting tables made of steel have the option of installing mechanical linkages to control the height and angle of the tabletop surface. A single foot pedal is most often used to control this movement and a heavy counterweight made of lead is also attached so that if the foot pedal is accidentally released the drawing board will not jump upright and injure the user.

A board cover made of thin vinyl sheets is used to provide an optimal surface for drawing and also provides protection against compasses and dividers that could damage the wooden table top. The whiteboard cover, if not cleaned properly to prevent graphite from accumulating on the whiteboard surface, can make new drawings dirty. A multipurpose tray is built into the bottom edge of the table that serves as a place to rest drawing pencils.

Another advantage of the drawing board is that achievements can be attached to them as a permanent parallel rule that is equal to the width of the table and moves parallel up and down with respect to the table. Some also include pre-calibrated scales and built-in guards to provide accurate measurements.

Electric motors are recently being introduced as an innovation in these tables, incorporated only to adjust the angle of the drawing surface. These steel tables are just as heavy as the old oak ones, but they have a push button adjustment system and are much more comfortable than the previous ones. But at the same time, if you go for a push button drafting table, their portability might be compromised because they are embedded with heavy motors and actuators that have put their weight back to the same old solid oak counterparts.

A handful of features and layouts with multiple options offering a table to furnish the determination of both the draftsman and the architect; it has become an inevitable part of every home and office. If you’re looking for a high-value proposition, then a drafting table presents a rewarding experience in your working life in so many ways.
