At the Friday night dance in my small town, an older gentleman turned up who I found very attractive. Now first you need to understand that I am attracted to younger men as I think, feel and look much younger than I am. Why was he attracted to me? Simply because he had a boyish posture. Yes, he was also in good physical condition, flat-stomached and obviously strong, but he must have been in his 80s and at the time, I was in my mid-fifties! We danced a few times, his straight spine never curved down, but he proudly displayed his real body.

Why are some people so young and energetic in their later years? Many reasons including nutrition, exercise, and most importantly attitude, but posture is king. He tries to look at you in the mirror, first from the side, collapsing. Do you look younger or older? Now, still standing to the side, he straightens his back, pulling his shoulders back if necessary, just to see the difference. Big difference, right?

So what to do if you’ve been slumping?

1. Find a doctor of chiropractic or osteopath who specializes in posture. They are out there and their techniques will improve your overall health as the spine houses the nervous system, the ruler of our organs. Ask about exercises you can do at home to improve your posture.

2. Every day, as much as you can, when you catch yourself collapsing, think out loud. Imagine that you are a puppet on a string, pulled up from the top of your head. Then relax your neck and the rest of your body, arms, legs, back and stomach.

3. Check out some chi kung or tai chi classes. It will surely help your posture, especially if you stay aware of it while doing the movements. Make sure you have your doctor’s approval.

4. Every day as you walk through the doors of your house, try this fun and relaxing exercise.– Stop and place your hands on the door frame at shoulder height, standing outside the door frame, feet on the threshold. Then bend over as far as you can comfortably and slowly count to ten. Try to do this three times a day. It will also open up your lungs according to my chiropractor! Check with your doctor to make sure this is okay for you.

5. Think of royalty, royalty, how a king or queen can sit and walk and stand. Well, a humble king or queen, of course. I think you will also be much more relaxed that way.
